TRAVEL TIPS FOR SOUTHERN COSTA RICA
Whether you prefer to drive or fly, visiting the Southern Pacific Zone of Costa Rica has never been easier.
Our favorite way to get to the Hills of Portalon is take a regional flight from Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose, to the Quepos / Manuel Antonio airport. Both Nature Air and Sansa Air have multiple daily flights from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) to Quepos. From Quepos, the Hills of Portalon is just a short 30 minute drive.
Taking this regional flight shaves over 3 and a half hours off of a drive from San Jose. The flight is also a much cheaper option than taking a shuttle or private ride service. You can have a rental car waiting for you at the Quepos airport or we can arrange transportation for you.
DRIVING A RENTAL CAR TO THE HILLS OF PORTALON
For those who would like to explore the country on the way to the Pacific Coast, you can rent a car at the airport in San Jose. Although it is not necessary, we highly recommend renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle. This will allow you to access more interesting places in the country, especially the mountainous regions in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone.
We also recommend using a navigation app on your cell phone like Google Maps or Waze to help you get around. Type in the names of towns, popular tourist locations, established local businesses, hospitals or airports, and you will get a good sense of where to go. Keep in mind that there are tolls from San Jose to the coast so make sure you have some local currency (colones) or small bills for your trip.
